ASSE 6000 Medical Gas Series

Medical Technology Associates, Inc. (MTA) has developed medical gas training courses compliant with ASSE 6000 Series and NFPA 99 designed to properly train and certify individuals that are involved with medical gas system operation, design, installation, repair, and service. Each course has its own prerequisites that must be met before an individual may complete the training.

6005 - Medical Gas Specialists

This 24-hour course is designed to provide interested personnel with the information needed to understand the unique equipment, installation processes, and safety checks required for medical gas and vacuum piping systems installed in human healthcare facilities per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements. NFPA 99 serves as the course’s textbook. This course is especially valuable for estimators, project supervisors, and design engineers, and can also be very beneficial for others who wish to learn about medical gas systems. Company officers interested in bidding on medical gas installations are encouraged to take this course and learn about the specialized requirements needed to successfully complete these projects. There is no minimum employment requirement for this course.

At the completion of the course, there is a standard written examination. This course follows the requirements of the American Society of Sanitary Engineering ASSE 6005 professional qualification standard for Medical Gas System Specialist. A certificate and I.D. card will be issued upon the successful completion of the course.

6010 - Medical Gas Installers

The ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer Certification Program was developed to provide qualified individuals with the minimum requirements of the standard and to allow the installation of medical gas, vacuum, and pipeline systems with the certification necessary to ensure that the individual has met the requirements of the ASSE Series 6000 Professional Qualifications Standard. This medical gas certification program is based on the code requirements identified in NFPA 99, Standard for Health Care Facilities. This program is comprised of a verification of work experience prerequisites, a 32-hour training course, and a written and practical brazing final examination.

Certification / Elegibility Requirements

The Medical Gas Systems Installer Certification is administered in accordance with the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) Series 6000 Standard. Candidates must meet the following requirements in order to become ASSE 6010 Certified.

  • All piping candidates shall have a minimum of four (4) years of practical experience installing piped gas systems
  • All candidates shall have successfully completed the thirty-two (32) hour training course covering all aspects of the ASSE Standard 6010, ASME IX or AWS B2.2 Brazing Qualification
  • All candidates must successfully pass the practical ASME IX Brazing examination or AWS B2.2 Brazing Qualification


A certificate and I.D. card will be issued upon the successful completion of the course.

6040 - Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel

The ASSE 6040 Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel Certification Program was developed to provide qualified individuals who are technically competent and experienced in the field of medical gas systems maintenance and testing and are responsible for the proper inspection, testing, and maintenance of medical gas and medical vacuum systems with the certification necessary to ensure that the individual has met the requirements of the ASSE Series 6000 Professional Qualifications Standard. This medical gas certification program is based on the code requirements identified in NFPA 99, Standard for Health Care Facilities. Candidates will also be given a basic understanding of medical gas systems general knowledge, applications, component overview, basic operating principles, performance characteristics, critical safety precautions, troubleshooting, routine maintenance and testing, and common repairs.

Certification / Elegibility Requirements

The Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel Certification program is administered in accordance with the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) Series 6000 Standard, Section 6040. Candidates must meet the following requirements in order to become ASSE 6040 Certified.

  • All candidates shall be employed or contracted by a healthcare facility or actively engaged in working with medical gas systems
  • All candidates shall have a minimum of one (1) year of documented experience in the maintenance or testing of medical gas systems
  • All candidates shall have successfully completed the thirty-two (32) hour training course covering all aspects of the ASSE Standard 6040
  • All candidates must successfully pass the final examination


A certificate and I.D. card will be issued upon the successful completion of the course.
